  1. PLANETS: A Solar System Plotter

  4.      This program was originally conceived and written (without graphics) on
  5. a TRS-80 back in 1980 or so.
  6.      Back then there was a book titled "The Jupiter Effect". In suggested
  7. that when all the planets in the solar system were arranged in a straight
  8. line, the sum of the gravities of them all would cause great planetary
  9. upheavals on Earth.
  10.      I was curious to learn how the planets would align themselves for any
  11. given calendar day and set out to write a program to plot the angle in
  12. degrees about the Sun for all planets for any date.
  13.      The book told a specific date (which passed without a ripple, though I
  14. cannot recall it) on which the planets would align and suggested this date as
  15. doomsday.
  16.      I tested it. First I found an astronomy book that had a listing of the
  17. angular placement of all planets on Jan. 1, 1971. In another book I found the
  18. angular movement per earth day that each planet moves. Next I found a
  19. biorhythm program that calculated the number of days between any two dates,
  20. and I was all set. It was done in BASIC on the TRS-80 and only displayed a
  21. chart of the angular position for each planet for the given date.
  22.      I found that indeed a few but not all planets were going to be aligned
  23. on the coming "doomsday". So I felt a bit safer. Sure enough, no harm came
  24. to earth that day.
  25.      The current version on the Amiga has a moving graphic display. It not
  26. only lets you enter the date that interests you but allows you to press the
  27. space bar to progress the positions by a day for each press. All the planets
  28. are represented in the graphic solar system, but the model is not to scale,
  29. since the scaled version of our solar system would not fit the screen easily.
  30. But you may see the alignments of the planets nicely.
